Before you can learn to drive a car, you must apply for a provisional licence. You need to be at least 17 years old, which is the minimum age that you can legally drive a car on public road in the UK. You can apply for your provisional licence three months before your 17th birthday and if you’re disabled and receiving mobility allowance you can start at the age of 16.
You can apply for your provisional driving licence by completing the D1 application form that is available from DVLA form ordering service or Post Office branches. You will also need to enclose original documentation confirming your identity, a passport-style colour photograph and the fee of £34 if applying online or £43 if applying by post. Send your completed application and payment to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AD.
You can apply for your provisional driving licence online at https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence if you:

When you are learning to drive, it is important to feel comfortable behind the wheel. The car must be safe, easy to handle and well equipped.
Without a shadow of a doubt, today’s challenges on the road are far more complex than ever before. DSA expectations for the standard of driving from the new drivers are higher than ever. As someone who is starting out as a driver, you will want the best preparation possible. You want to be taught by an instructor with training and expertise to keep you and the car safe.
If you are nervous about driving, don’t worry - it is perfectly normal. The important thing is to make sure you learn with a professional instructor. PPP driving school knows how to help you get over your anxieties and put you at ease.
To get your licence you need to pass a theory test and practical driving test.
The theory test is made up of multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception. You need to pass both parts to pass the theory test. For car and motorcycle the number of multiple-choice questions are 50. To pass you will need to get 43 out of 50 answers correct. The time allowed is 57 minutes unless you have a special requirement.
The hazard perception test is made up of 14 minute-long video clips featuring various hazards - 15 in total, each of them with a maximum of five marks. To pass you will need to get 44 out of 75. The theory test pass certificate is valid for two years. You will need the certificate to book and take your practical test, so keep it safe.
The practical test will last around 40 minutes. Throughout the test your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving. The examiner will test your eyesight by asking you to read a number plate from a distance. You will be asked two vehicle safety questions (“show me, tell me”). You will be asked to complete an exercise to show how well you can reverse your vehicle. The examiner will choose one exercise from:
- Forward bay parking
- Stop on the right side of the road
- Reverse parallel parking or bay parking
Your driving test will include 20 minutes of independent driving. You might also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.
You will pass your test if you make:
- 15 or fewer driving faults
- No serious or dangerous faults
As soon as your practical test is over, the examiner will tell you the result.
Your full driving licence will come in two parts: a plastic photo card and a paper counterpart, which includes your driving entitlement history and any endorsements. The photo card will tell you what type of vehicle classifications you are entitled to drive.
